COMPETITION PROGRAM

1. First Round (10–15 minutes)

Free choice of repertoire.

Performances will take place on stage, behind a curtain.

Jury members will not be informed of the performers’ names.

2. Semi-Final (25–30 minutes)

Free choice of repertoire.

3. Final (35–40 minutes)

Free choice of repertoire.

Repertoire Requirements

  • Across all three rounds, participants may freely select their program.
  • The first round must include:
  • At least one movement from a Viennese Classical composer (Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven).
  • One virtuoso étude (e.g., Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin, Debussy, etc.).
  • Works may not be repeated in different rounds.
  • Memorized performance is required for all rounds.
  • While not mandatory, competitors are encouraged to include at least one piece by a Croatian composer in either the semi-final or the final. A list of suggested Croatian composers can be found on the website Cantus.hr (you need to e-mail them)

COMPETITION rULES

Age limit: Up to 32 years old.

  1. Members of the jury may not vote for a candidate with whom they have a close
    connection. Having “a close connection” in this context means that a member of the
    jury and a candidate are related.
  2. Members of the jury may not vote for a candidate who is, or has been, one of their
    students.
  3. Throughout the entire competition, the members of the jury shall refrain from having
    any contact, direct or indirect, with the candidates.
  4. Jury members shall also refrain from making any statements about the candidates, the
    activities of the jury, or the organization of the competition.
  5. If participant’s performance does not meet the requirements of the competition, the
    jury has the right to stop the performance and not allow participating in further
    competition.
  6. The decision of the Jury is indisputable.

Natalia Trull was born in St. Petersburg, where she began her piano studies at the Leningrad Conservatory under T. Rumshievich. In 1974, she continued her training at the Moscow State Conservatory, studying with Yakov Zak and Mikhail Voskresensky, later perfecting her artistry at the Leningrad Conservatory under Professor T. Kravchenko.

She is a laureate of numerous international competitions, including First Prize at the Belgrade International Piano Competition (1981), Second Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1986), and the Grand Prix at the Monte Carlo International Competition (1993).

Trull began her distinguished teaching career in 1981 as assistant to T. Kravchenko at the Leningrad Conservatory, later becoming a full professor. In 1988, she joined the Moscow State Conservatory as assistant to Mikhail Voskresensky, where she was appointed Associate Professor in 1995 and promoted to Professor of Piano in 2004. Since 2007, she has also taught at the elite Special Piano Department under Vera Gornostaeva.

As a soloist, she has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, and Monte Carlo Symphony Orchestra, as well as all major Russian orchestras. She has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Raphael Frühbeck de Burgos, Raymond Leppard, Jean-Bernard Pommier, Eri Klas, Vasily Sinaisky, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Yuri Temirkanov, Vladimir Fedoseyev, and others.

Her repertoire spans more than fifty concertos, with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor a particular hallmark—performed over one hundred times worldwide, including celebrated appearances at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Eri Klas and at Tokyo’s Suntory Hall with the Tokyo Philharmonic under Kazuhira Koizumi.

Gülsin Onay (born 12 September 1954, Istanbul, Turkey) is an internationally acclaimed Turkish classical pianist, celebrated for her interpretations of Frédéric Chopin and Ahmed Adnan Saygun. Recognized as one of Turkey’s foremost musicians, she holds the title of State Artist of the Republic of Turkey and has performed in over 80 countries across six continents.

Born into a musical family, Onay displayed exceptional talent from an early age, beginning piano lessons at the age of three under the guidance of her mother. At just six years old, she gave her first public performance on TRT Radio Istanbul.

Recognized as a prodigy, she received a special government scholarship under Turkey’s Law for Exceptionally Talented Children (Üstün Yetenekli Çocuklar Kanunu) at age ten. This enabled her to study in Ankara with Mithat Fenmen and Ahmed Adnan Saygun, before moving to France to attend the Paris Conservatory. There she studied with renowned teachers including Pierre Sancan, Monique Haas, Pierre Fiquet, and Nadia Boulanger, graduating at age sixteen with the Premier Prix de Piano. She later continued her musical education in Germany at the Musikhochschule Hannover, studying with Bernhard Ebert.

Gülsin Onay gained international attention early in her career by earning prizes at prestigious competitions such as the Marguerite Long–Jacques Thibaud and Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competitions.

Her distinguished career has taken her to major concert halls across the world, performing with orchestras such as the Dresden Staatskapelle, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, St Petersburg Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Tokyo Symphony, and many others. She has collaborated with prominent conductors including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Neeme Järvi, Edward Gardner, and José Serebrier.

Born in Manchester in 1953, Peter Donohoe is widely acclaimed as one of the foremost pianists of our time, admired for his exceptional musicianship, stylistic versatility, and commanding technique. He studied at Chetham’s School of Music, Leeds University, the Royal Northern College of Music with Derek Wyndham, and in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod.

Donohoe has appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Munich Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Swedish Radio Symphony, and all major London orchestras. He has also performed under conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, with whom he appeared in the Berliner Philharmoniker’s opening concerts of Rattle’s tenure. His festival appearances include the BBC Proms (22 appearances to date), six consecutive visits to the Edinburgh Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron, and the Ruhr and Schleswig-Holstein Festivals.

Recent highlights include engagements with the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Cape Town Philharmonic, St Petersburg Philharmonia, Dresden Philharmonic, and tours across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The 2023/24 season opened with performances of Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie with Sir Simon Rattle and the LSO, followed by concerts in Philadelphia and adjudication at the 3rd Classic Piano Competition in Dubai.

German pianist Andreas Frölich studied with Stefan Askenase, Vitaly Margulis, and Pavel Gililov, winning prizes at several international competitions in Italy and Austria. Since then, he has performed at many of the world’s leading venues—including the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Musikverein Vienna, Salzburg Mozarteum, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, Cologne Philharmonie, Munich Philharmonie “Gasteig,” Konzerthaus Berlin, and Salle Gaveau Paris—as well as at major festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and Rheingau Musik Festival.

As a soloist, Frölich has appeared with renowned orchestras including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Salzburg Chamber Soloists, Wiener Kammerphilharmonie, Münchener Kammerorchester, Beethoven Orchester Bonn, and Johannesburg Philharmonic. He is also an active chamber musician, pianist of the Mendelssohn Trio Berlin, and a frequent collaborator with Ensemble Wien. His discography spans more than 40 award-winning CDs released on labels such as EMI, BMG, Oehms Classics, and CPO.

In addition to his concert career, Frölich is a professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln/Aachen and a guest professor at institutions such as the Mozarteum Salzburg and the Talent Music Masters Academy in Brescia. He regularly gives masterclasses worldwide, and his students have won more than 80 prizes at international competitions. Frölich is also artistic director of the MozARTe International Piano Competition and Festival in Aachen and is frequently invited to serve on juries at major piano competitions around the globe. He is an official Steinway Artist.

Pascal Nemirovski is an internationally acclaimed pianist and one of the world’s most sought-after piano pedagogues. He holds the position of International Chair in Piano at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and is an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, London. A Steinway Artist, he is also the CEO and Founder of IPM – International Piano Masters, a global platform supporting the next generation of pianists through masterclasses, competitions, and artistic collaborations.

Nemirovski studied at the Juilliard School in New York with Nadia Reisenberg and Adele Marcus, before furthering his training in Paris with France Clidat and Alexis Weissenberg. His artistry has been praised for its balance of virtuosity and musical depth, as reflected in his acclaimed recording Entre Ciel et Terre (2004), devoted to Chopin, Prokofiev, and Scriabin.

Renowned as a mentor, Nemirovski has guided numerous prize-winning pianists, including laureates of the Tchaikovsky (Moscow), Leeds, Busoni, Dublin, Sydney, Ettlingen, Sendai and BBC New Generation Artist programs. Many of his former students—such as Lise de la Salle, Louis Schwizgebel, Daniel Lebhardt, Roman Kosyakov, Emanuil Ivanov, George Harliono, and Yi Zhong—have gone on to international acclaim, securing representation with major artist management companies.

Alongside his teaching, Nemirovski is a regular guest at leading conservatoires and festivals worldwide, including the Juilliard School, Shanghai and Beijing Conservatories, Sibelius Academy, Royal Academy of Music, and Moscow Conservatory. He is frequently invited to serve on the juries of prestigious international competitions and to lead masterclasses across Europe, Asia, and the United States.
