COMPETITION rULES

Age limit: Up to 32 years old.

  1. Members of the jury may not vote for a candidate with whom they have a close
    connection. Having “a close connection” in this context means that a member of the
    jury and a candidate are related.
  2. Members of the jury may not vote for a candidate who is, or has been, one of their
    students.
  3. Throughout the entire competition, the members of the jury shall refrain from having
    any contact, direct or indirect, with the candidates.
  4. Jury members shall also refrain from making any statements about the candidates, the
    activities of the jury, or the organization of the competition.
  5. If participant’s performance does not meet the requirements of the competition, the
    jury has the right to stop the performance and not allow participating in further
    competition.
  6. First Round (video recordings): For each candidate, the members of the jury will
    indicate whether they wish to admit that candidate to the second round with a ‘YES’
    or ‘NO’.
  7. Semi-final and Final Round: The Jury evaluates the performance of competitors
    based on following criteria: artistic performance, technic, style, total impression.
  8. The decision of the Jury is indisputable.

JURY BIOGRAPHIES

Miha Rogina 2025-09-22T09:10:13+00:00

Slovenian saxophonist and conductor Miha Rogina has been described by The Sax magazine as “the best saxophonist of today’s younger generation”. Celebrated for his innovative interpretations, he is a laureate of more than ten international competitions and has appeared on leading concert stages worldwide, including the Vienna Musikverein, Salle Pleyel in Paris, Großes Festspielhaus in Salzburg, and Izumi Hall in Osaka. He has collaborated with distinguished musicians such as Pierre Boulez and Fabio Luisi.

Rogina studied saxophone with Matjaž Drevenšek in Ljubljana, later graduating with highest honours from the CNSM de Paris under Claude Delangle, and furthered his education at the Eastman School of Music. He also holds degrees in orchestral (2015) and choral conducting (2019) from the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna.

As soloist, he has performed with orchestras including the Vienna Symphony, Thailand Philharmonic, Slovenian Philharmonic, RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, and Bratislava Philharmonic. A passionate chamber musician, he frequently tours internationally with pianist Sae Lee as Duo Kalypso.

Currently Professor of Saxophone at the Academy of Music, University of Ljubljana, Rogina also teaches as guest professor at institutions including Senzoku Gakuen University (Tokyo), Osaka College of Music, and the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki). He regularly gives masterclasses across Europe and Asia and serves as a juror at major saxophone competitions.

In addition, Rogina is active as a conductor, leading orchestras such as the Slovenian Philharmonic, RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, Bratislava Philharmonic, and the Chamber Orchestra of the Paris Conservatoire. As a member of the Wiener Singverein, he has performed under the direction of Riccardo Muti, Mariss Jansons, and Daniel Barenboim.

Croatian saxophonist and conductor Dragan Sremec is Professor of Saxophone at the Zagreb Academy of Music, where he has also served as Vice-Dean. He studied saxophone with Josip Nochta and conducting with Igor Gjadrov at the Zagreb Academy, later perfecting his artistry with Daniel Deffayet at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and Eugene Rousseau at Indiana University in Bloomington as a Fulbright Scholar.

Founder of the Zagreb Saxophone Quartet, Sremec has been its long-time member and recording artist, earning numerous awards including several Porin prizes. He has appeared as soloist with leading orchestras such as the Zagreb Philharmonic, HRT Symphony Orchestra, Slovenian Philharmonic, U.S. Navy Band, and the French Republican Guard Band, performing under conductors including Kazushi Ono, Pavle Dešpalj, Nikša Bareza, and Vjekoslav Šutej. He has premiered more than fifty works, many written for him or his quartet, and has recorded extensively for radio, television, and on disc.

Sremec was Artistic Director and founder of the Josip Nochta International Saxophone Competition, and in 2018 served as Artistic Director of the 18th World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, hosting over 1,900 participants from nearly 50 countries. He is a frequent jury member at international competitions and gives masterclasses throughout Europe, the USA, and beyond.

Croatian saxophonist Tomislav Žužak (b. 1978) is regarded as one of the leading figures of his generation. Known for his exceptional proficiency and versatility, he performs a wide-ranging repertoire with particular dedication to contemporary music.

Žužak has appeared as a soloist with orchestras and in chamber ensembles, recording several CDs both as a soloist and with the acclaimed Papandopulo Quartet, of which he has been a member since 2008. He studied at the Zagreb Academy of Music with Dragan Sremec, later refining his artistry at the Paris conservatories under Jean-Yves Fourmeau and Philippe Portejoie, as well as through masterclasses with Jean-Marie Londeix, Eugene Rousseau, and Claude Delangle.

A laureate of numerous national and international competitions, Žužak is also deeply committed to education. He teaches saxophone at the University of Zagreb, the University of Sarajevo, and the Samobor School of Music. He is the founder and co-organizer of the Saxophone School in Jaska and leads workshops for Croatian Music Youth, contributing significantly to the development of young musicians in the region.

Polish saxophonist Paweł Gusnar (b. 1976, Sosnowiec) is an internationally acclaimed soloist, chamber musician, session artist, and pedagogue. Professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where he also serves as Vice-Rector, he leads the saxophone class at the Academy of Music in Łódź and is a member of the Polish Council for Scientific Excellence.

Equally at home in classical, jazz, and contemporary repertoire, Gusnar has appeared with nearly all of Poland’s major symphony orchestras, as well as with ensembles such as Sinfonia Varsovia, the Polish Radio Orchestra, Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, and NOSPR. He is also active on the international stage, performing across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. A champion of contemporary music, he has premiered over 80 works written for him, including saxophone concertos by Krzysztof Penderecki, Krzysztof Knittel, Krzysztof Herdzin, and Weronika Ratusińska-Zamuszko.

His discography exceeds 60 albums, nearly 20 of them solo, including the acclaimed Saxophone Varie series. He is a six-time winner of the Polish Fryderyk Award, most recently in 2024 for Le clavecin moderne plus saxophone, vol. 2. Gusnar is the founder and conductor of the Warsaw Saxophone Orchestra, an active juror at international competitions, and a frequent masterclass professor worldwide.

Gordan Tudor is recognized as one of the leading musicians of his generation, active as a soloist, composer, chamber musician, improviser, and pedagogue. A multiple prizewinner at national and international competitions, he is also the recipient of numerous artistic and recording awards. He has appeared throughout Europe and North America, performing both as a soloist with orchestras and in various chamber ensembles.

His compositions have been performed on every continent by renowned soloists such as James Carter, Eric Aubier, Claude Delangle, Zoran Dukić, JD Michat, Philippe Geiss, Mišlav Režić, Lovro Marušić, Danijel Detoni, Petrit Çeku, and Martina Filjak, as well as by leading ensembles including the Amstel Quartet, Strasbourg Saxophone Ensemble, Zagreb Soloists, Zagreb Saxophone Quartet, Varaždin Chamber Orchestra, Cantus Ensemble, and many others. His works are regularly programmed at major international festivals, and his ballet The Plumber enjoyed five consecutive seasons at Zagreb’s &TD Theatre and was presented at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

Tudor is professor of saxophone at the Academy of Arts in Split (UMAS), where he also founded and directs the contemporary music ensemble S/UMAS. A graduate of institutions in Split, Zagreb, Amsterdam, and Paris, he is a founding member of the acclaimed Papandopulo Quartet and collaborates in chamber formations with guitarist Mislav Režić, pianist Martina Filjak, and cellist Eckart Runge. He has also been artist-in-residence at the Bang on a Can Summer Festival (USA).

An exclusive Selmer Paris and D’Addario Woodwinds Artist, his works are published by the Dutch publishing house Donemus.
